A Tardian critique of emergent relations

Sociological theorists have argued that the key to the distinction between social life and political life is the emergence of society out of collections of individuals. This premise has been an effective tool in the foundation of sociology. A downside is that the notion of society becomes an abstract notion divorced from history and defended with abstruse philosophical arguments about ‘realism’. Many have thought the problem is an excess of philosophical conceit. In his day, Tarde for example criticized Durkheim’s “scholasticism” (Tarde and Durkheim 2010). To be sure, Tarde himself does not eschew philosophical thought. To the contrary, as we have seen, he constructs a metaphysics of difference that later inspired Gilles Deleuze. One that harks, as we shall see, back to Leibniz’s break with scholasticism.
